Trad Climbing And It Stands For:
Most people who are not familiar with climbing tend to get a bit confused when the topic of trad climbing is talked about. And that is because many young climbers think that trad or traditional climbing is hard and confusing. However, that is absolutely not the case. One of the most crucial reasons behind this is because many don’t know what trad climbing actually is. To put it into simple words, trad climbing or traditional climbing as it is known is the type of climbing where climbers are very well equipped with different types of gear in order to protect them against all accidents. And that is pretty much it.
Nonetheless, I am here to talk to you about the best trad climbing shoes. In the plethora of so many different climbing shoes out there, it can get immensely confusing even for professional climbers to find the right shoe for the occasion. Best Trad Climbing Shoes:
- Five Ten Men’s Anasazi Climbing Shoe.
- La Sportiva Men’s Miura Climbing Shoe.
- Evolv Men’s Astroman-M.
1. Five Ten Men’s Anasazi Climbing Shoe:
Do not judge it by its bright pink color or its extravagant looks, because the Five Ten Men’s Anasazi Climbing Shoe is more than what it looks like. The reason I say that is because the Five Ten Men’s Anasazi Climbing Shoe does not look like most climbing shoes out there on the market. And by that I mean is the Five Ten Men’s Anasazi Climbing Shoe has a rather more traditional design and does not have fancy concepts and all. However, this goes for all trad climbing shoes because almost all of them are designed in simple and basic ways.
The Five Ten Men’s Anasazi Climbing Shoe features a classic lace-up design that not only looks good on the shoe but will allow you to get a very good fit and feel. The shoe features a Lined Cordura upper instead of hard leather. Even though this does hamper the durability a bit and won’t allow much stretch over time, that is not much of an issue because the shoe feels comfortable nonetheless.
The shoe has a basic flat design but still manages to keep a little bit of downturn on the forefoot to help with cracks and edging. Underneath it features a hard rubber sole that is of very good quality and won’t fade away over time. The outsole works very well with the midsole of the shoe that has a mediocre level of stiffness in order to help you with the stability and comfort. The Five Ten Men’s Anasazi Climbing Shoe is a very simple and straightforward shoe and that is what makes the shoe so good and perform excellently on cracks, edges and what not. It will be able to perform very well on almost on all conditions.
- Simple and straightforward.
- Does not have extra fancy components of concepts.
- The flat design will help you to improve on your footwork.
- Good hard and stiff sole.
- The color might not be very appealing for male climbers.
2. La Sportiva Men’s Miura Climbing Shoe:
If you have checked my previous articles, then you will know that I am a huge fan of the La Sportiva Men’s Miura. I believe that it is one of the best climbing shoes that La Sportiva has ever produced. The shoe started as a frontrunner and continues to be a classic with passing years as more and more upgrades have gone by.
With the Miura, La Sportiva has decided to keep things basic and simple and that has worked excellently for them. And that is because over time the shoe has received multiple upgrades and additions. One of La Sportiva’s well-known concepts in their shoes is their in-house Vibram soles. The Miura uses a Vibram XS rubber sole that is hard but also flexible at the same time. The outsole will allow you to get good power on your forefoot and toes helping you in edging, smearing and hooks. In addition, you will also feel comfortable all day long in these shoes. The 100% leather upper is surrounded with a very nice Dentex lining that will help to keep your feet cool and dry.
Over time, we have seen climbing shoes evolve and get multiple modifications. Producers today attach a lot of extra things in order to enhance the performance of their shoe. La Sportiva doesn’t fall behind as well. There are many rubber patches on different parts of the shoe that will help to keep your feet safe while hooking periods. I would say that the hooking on this shoe is pretty good. However, when it comes to the Miura the fit will play a crucial role as well. For example, when I wore and tested this shoe I had no issues whatsoever in hooking. However, when I gave the shoe to some of my fellow climbers who had a low volume heel, that is when the shoe started slipping off at multiple occasions.
The La Sportiva Men’s Miura Climbing Shoe is a very advanced climbing shoe and has all the things and aspects that are required for it to be one of the best trad climbing shoes out there. It is a very good allrounder overall and it won’t disappoint you.
- High quality and well made.
- Not the best when it comes to advanced bouldering.
3. Evolv Men’s Astroman-M:
The Evolv Men’s Astroman-M has to be one of the most distinctive looking climbing shoes that I ever came upon. However, just because it does not have a traditional climbing shoe design does not by any means mean that it’s not a good shoe. As a matter of fact, coming from Evolv everyone would expect this shoe to be a very good performing one and Evolv doesn’t disappoint here at all. As you can already see from the photos, the shoe has a high ankle boot like design to it.
However, it is not just the looks that sort this shoe out from the rest. The fit and feel of these shoes is also something that is very different in comparison to most climbing shoes out there. It is comparatively wide because of the thicker rubber underneath that not only gives good protection to the wearer but will also give you a very good grip on rocks. These shoes are also superbly comfortable as well. Like every other shoe from Evolv, these take very less time to break in and will feel super comfortable once they do.
There is no need for you to be skeptical about the shape and design of the shoe because the high construction design allows for good protection and that is very necessary for trad climbing. In addition, the wide shape will assist you in cracks that are both wide and narrow. If you think that this shoe doesn’t have enough protection then you would be happy to know that there is also a small padded area that will help keep your achilles tendon from hurting. The Evolv Men’s Astroman might be a well-priced shoe but it is by no means an average shoe or anything. The reliability, performance, and durability you will get from this are just unreal.
- Distinctive design makes it stand out.
- Good for beginner climbers.
- Provides good protection on trad climbing.
- The wide aspect of the shoe might not be suitable for everyone.
